Kenku
Living in close knit flocks, most Kenku stay within their family conspiracy. Viewed as destructive, deceitful, lazy thieves by most, unconcerned with consequence of action and known for vocal mimicry, they can perfectly imitate any sound they hear. Whether it's the voice of a man, the clinking of metal, or even the rustling of wind in the trees, this ability makes them exceptional marauders, able to deceive and confuse targets with voices not their own. This skill at mimicry is not communication in a conventional sense. Kenku communicate by mimicking the sounds they have heard, often using them out of context to confuse others. Being highly observant and capable of understanding their environment, which includes Man and other animals, they learn through imitation and association, which is why they are so good at mimicking sounds, words, and even behaviors. Their thought processes are often based on what they see and hear, and they can connect actions with outcomes. They don't "think" in the abstract way Man does, however their understanding of cause and effect is sophisticated.
Kenku are also capable of solving problems and adapting to new situations. They are curious creatures, and their minds are always active, constantly analyzing their surroundings and testing new things. This problem solving ability is often seen when they manipulate objects to get food or find a way out of a bind. Cunning and distrustful, Kenku steal tools, coins, food, or anything shinny that catches the eye from other nests and dwellings. Natural bandits, yet they can be befriended by the patient.
Standing at about 4 ½ feet tall, the Kenku are small yet agile with an adult weighing up to 30lbs. They have sleek, feathered bodies, their plumage typically dark and glossy with hues of deep blacks, blues, and purples, though some have brighter, more iridescent feathers. Their most striking feature is their 12-foot wingspan, which allows them to glide and soar with great skill, though they lack the strength to truly fly. These wings are adapted for short bursts of flight and controlled descents rather than sustained long distant travel.
Despite their small size, Kenku are sturdy and resilient, with sharp beaks and keen eyesight. Their talons are capable of grasping tools and weapons, though their preference lies in pilfering objects that catch their attention, especially anything reflective.
Despite their reputation, Kenku can form lasting relationships with other races, though these relationships require a great deal of patience. Those who earn the Kenku's trust will find them to be loyal companions, if somewhat unpredictable and prone to mischievous behavior. A Kenku in the right circumstances can be a valuable ally, one who can navigate even the most perilous situations using wit and their ability to blend into any background.
